Stanwix bowlers and Olden Time Carlisle

Still in use today, Stanwix Bowling Club was opened in May 1901, this picture was probably taken shortly after it opened. The housing is on Stanwix Bank.

Carlisle from Stanwix Bank around 1745. Only one of the two Eden Bridges can be seen but the two channels are visible. After 100 years of peace since the English Civil War people were starting to build just outside the city walls, the '45 sent them hurrying back inside.

The view from Caldewgate in the same era. The view is from where Port Road Business Park is now, then called Primrose Bank. The river is the Caldew (stone bridge) and the mill race with the wooden walkway. The road is leading to the Irishgate, one of 3 gates into the city.

How many tourists could we entice to the city nowadays if we had kept the walls in good repair?
