Richardson St. cemetery was one of 3 opened to address the situation with the city's cemeteries which were becoming overcrowded and decayed.
It was opened in 1855, followed by Upperby in 1881 (an extension to the existing graveyard) and Stanwix (Kingstown Road) in 1887.
The building is unchanged since it was built.
