Carlisle Castle Batch One
Carlisle Castle is one of the most photographed
buildings in the city, unfortunately for the
postcard collector its appearance has changed
very little in 900 years. This reduces the
'then and now' effect people like in cards.
I will try to find some of interest anyway.
The inner Bailey. No date but has to be earlier than 1919
as this is when the inner moat was re-excavated. As can
seen there is no ditch between parade ground & tower
as there is now. The well with its fence can still be seen
in the inner bailey. The two 'wings' to the gatehouse
were demolished some time ago.
A 'Valentine's' card No.3868.
An early card (1903) depicting soldiers
posing outside the main gate. The barracks
were inside the castle with the married
quarters outside where the eastbound
dual carriageway is today.
A 'Wrench' series card No. 2388
Printed in Saxony.
A general view.
An artcard produced as an advertisment, probably
given away free to customers. It is possibly a washing line
in the picture (not goalposts) as this would be behind the
married quarters.
Reverse of the above card.
