It's those trams again.

Trams were a popular theme on postcards, although the colouring on some cards is not true. From 1900-12 the trams were chocolate-brown and cream, after 1912 this changed to dark green and cream lined out in cream and red. They ran from 30th June 1900 until 21st November 1931.

Here a tram wends its way along English St on a nice sunny day. The Maypole Tea Company shop is on the left. The card was posted 4 weeks before the end of WWI in 1918.

A tram is just passing the Goal Tap public house on English St, probably on its way to London Rd or St Nicholas Bridges. Note the horse-drawn wagon and handcarts, the handcarts may have been Carriers from the station.

Card posted July 1905.

Posted in 1906, this card shows a tram passing Robinsons Dept. store on English St. This I believe was the biggest shop in Carlisle at the time.

Boy racer tram drivers in Carlisle? These two appear to be having a race along English St. around 1907. A fairly quiet day with little traffic about. The pre-Lanes shops are on the right.

This card at least does seem to have stuck to the colour scheme of the day ( chocolate-brown & cream ).

Published by Nicholson & Cartner of Carlisle.

Approaching English St. from Botchergate the man in front looks as if he about to become a traffic accident statistic. A couple of 'rozzers' stand to the right of the card, probably waiting to breathalyse the driver when he mows down the pedestrian. :-)

This image was registered by Valentines in late 1900, so is a very early tram shot.
