Carlisle Cathedral
The Cathedral, like the castle has changed little in appearance over the years but here are a few interesting cards.
A card of 1909 showing the potato market readying for business on Castle St. The Cathedral railings were not removed during WWII as many think but in 1930 as it was thought they detracted from the beauty of the cathedral.
Towering above the skyline in this card (pre 1930s as the bridge has not been widened), the cathedral dominates this view from Brampton Road.
St Mary's Church stood where the raised floral display is today from 1870-1954
Another view of the railings, this card is dated 1903.
An early view from Castle St. around 1904.
The Abbey gateway, it was in this building that Carlisle's first Dispensary was located.
A Tucks 'artcard' view of the West Door in the early 1900s.
Lastly another view of the Abbey gateway showing how little this view has changed in 100 years, this card was posted in 1906.
