Town Hall, Castle St & Eden Terrace

An added extra in reference to the last card on this post. This map shows the two arms of the river, the Eden actually ran where the Civic Centre is today, the other arm was known as the Priest Beck and ran where the river runs today. The island in the centre became a meeting place and cattle markets were held there. New bridges were built in 1815-1817 and the southern channel blocked but a bridge was still needed over the former river channel. In 1895 household refuse was used to fill the former channel in and the Sands laid out as a proper cattle market (Sands Centre site today). it was known as the Sands because the running of the two arms of the river left a sandy island in the middle.

Market Square, Carlisle.

Shows what could be the start of a market day crowd with wagons laden with goods, or may simply be wagons with goods for outlying places waiting to set off.

About 1905.

A similar shot to above but a much quieter scene.

Bewshers Wine & Spirit shop is behind the Cross.

New bridge over the River Eden, built in 1922.

Castle Bank, Carlisle.

This view is from the Bitts Park car park end.
I believe this and Weavers Bank (the raised walk through Bitts Park) were built by weavers who had fallen on hard times and these jobs were created for them.

Card one of 3 different views of Eden Terrace on Stanwix Bank.

Essentially a view of Castle St about 1910, the entrance to Long Lane is just left of centre. The first view of Eden Terrace is in the top right corner.

Taken from the castle, here we get a better view of Eden Terrace which stood where the 'Chinese Gardens' are now.

Far left is also a view of the houses that used to stand at the junction of Stanwix Bank and Brampton Road.

Finally a good view of the terrace from across the river, the terrace was demolished in 1932 to make way for the widening of Eden Bridges.

Have you ever wondered why they call them Eden BRIDGES when there is only one?
